The weekend approaches, which means a chance to sit back and enjoy the latest TV shows coming to Netflix, which is forever replenishing its bottomless well of content. There’s a lot of stuff worth paying attention to this week, starting with these three headliners.
The Night Agent (Thursday, February 18)
The smash hit spy series returns
By far the biggest release of the week is the third season of The Night Agent, which is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. It’s not quite a detective series, but there is a lot of high-stakes mystery involved.
In the first season of The Night Agent, FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) teamed up with cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) to prevent an assassination attempt on the president. In the second season, they stopped a chemical attack on the United Nations. That season ended with Peter being sent under cover at the White House to counter the plans of Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), a corrupt billionaire and information broker who was trying to take control of the U.S. government.
That’s where the third season will pick up. If it’s anything like the first two seasons, we’ll get a lot of high-octane action, drama, and mystery, along with a dash of romance to add some spice, all of it anchored by Basso’s sturdy leading man performance as Peter. The Night Agent may not break many new molds, but it’s dependable meat-and-potatoes drama done well.

Strip Law (Friday, February 19)
Adult Swim-style comedy on Netflix
Strip Law is a new animated comedy series about a lawyer (Adam Scott) who doesn’t have enough panache to make it in a showy city like Las Vegas. He teams up with a local magician named Sheila Flambé (Janelle James) to help him with his salesmanship. Cue the wackiness.
Netflix has a long history of making successful animated comedies, running from Bojack Horseman through shows like Disenchantment and Big Mouth. Strip Law looks like it’s following in that tradition.
Usually, I’d wait a while before recommending a new show like this, but there are a few things about Strip Law that make me take notice, mainly the cast. Adam Scott is a terrific character actor capable of holding down both classic sitcoms like Parks and Recreation as well as sci-fi epics like Severance, one of the hottest shows on TV today. Janelle James is best known for her role as Principal Eva on Abbott Elementary, where she steals pretty much every scene she’s in. The show also stars TV journeyman Stephen Root, living legend Keith David, Community star Joel McHale, and Oscar winner Jim Rash. It’s a suspiciously large amount of top-tier talent for a low-profile show. It makes you wonder what Strip Law has that attracted so many good people.

Mike & Molly seasons 1-6 (Friday, February 20)
The whole series will be on Netflix
Not everything worth watching on Netflix is a Netflix original production. Mike & Molly was a sitcom that ran on CBS from 2010 to 2016. It’s a classic comfort food sitcom made for modern audiences, about a police officer (Billy Gardell) and a schoolteacher (Melissa McCarthy) who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and go on to have a six-season romance.
Mike & Molly is just good old-fashioned fun. It balances heart with humor, it has a great cast of supporting players — Reno Wilson as Mike’s partner Carl is an especial highlight — and there’s a ton of it. All 127 episodes of the show are coming to Netflix, which means dozens of hours of easy watching for when you just need a quick laugh.

And more!
Those are three of the big-ticket items coming to Netflix this weekend, but with Netflix, that’s always just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other originals on the way, including a pair of original docuseries: Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model goes behind the scenes of the influential reality show, and Being Gordon Ramsay explores the life and times of the celebrity chef. There are lots of Netflix original movies on the way too, including The Swedish Connection, Firebreak, The Orphans, and Pavane. And Netflix is always ready with a new comedy special: this time it’s Sommore: Chandelier Fly, from the stand-up comic Sommore.
There’re a lot of non-Netflix originals worth noting coming to the service, too. Netflix has the first three seasons of the detective show Veronica Mars available to watch right now. Come Friday, it’ll finally get the fourth and final one. The two recent animated Addams Family will hit Netflix on the same day, if you’re looking for a little family fare. And if you’re not, you can check out all four Expendables movies, which also arrive Friday. Finally, if you want something a little more cultured, the award-winning movie East of Wall will drop on Netflix on Thursday.
