Augmented reality (AR) glasses have always promised a “monitor in your pocket,” but for gamers, they’ve often fallen short. Between laggy visuals and that dreaded feeling of motion sickness, they’ve always been more of a novelty than a serious gear upgrade.
That could all be about to change — ASUS and XREAL have teamed up to create the ROG XREAL R1, combining XREAL’s optical tech with ASUS’s gaming expertise. These glasses aim to replace your TV, monitor, and maybe one day, your console. Here’s everything you need to know about the ROG XREAL R1, including new updates on specs, pre-orders, and price.
I made the switch to Steam OS on my ROG Ally X and haven’t looked back
Being reunited with SteamOS has never felt better, especially on the ROG Ally X
The XREAL R1 packs some impressive specs
Huge screens, everywhere
Built on XREAL’s industry-leading XR technology, the ROG XREAL R1 specs will put a massive 171-inch virtual screen right in front of your eyeballs. With a 240Hz refresh rate and a 0.01ms response time, its images should be smooth and responsive, with low latency for comfortable gaming sessions.
The ROG XREAL R1 is powered by the ROG Control Dock, which means there’s extensive connectivity via DisplayPort™ 1.4 and two HDMI® 2.0 ports. This means you’ll be able to switch between your PC and console with a single click. Neat!
However, one of the most impressive features I wasn’t expecting was its XREAL X1 spatial computing chip. A lot of competitor AR glasses leave users feeling motion sick or are hard to interact with. However, XREAL’s 3 Degrees of Freedom (3DoF) supports intuitive spatial interaction, allowing users to fix the display in space or have it move seamlessly with their field of view. This real-time 2D-to-3D conversion lets you experience lifelike depth and scale in existing game libraries. Depending on your preference, you can either ‘pin’ your 171-inch screen in a fixed position or use seamless tracking with your movement to improve stability and realism.
My personal favorite feature, however, is the electrochromic lens technology. The lenses adjust transparency in real time, giving you three manual tint levels and instant transparency with one click.
You can even use these even if you’re not a gamer
If you’re at home, the ROG Control Dock, which you get with purchase, turns the glasses into a desktop-class hub. While these glasses work with any device with a USB-C port, they are a dream come true for ROG Ally owners. The R1 is optimized for plug-and-play with the Ally, meaning you can control the glasses’ settings directly from the handheld without pausing your game.
But if you’re not a gamer, you can still use the ROG XREAL R1 to blow up your scrolls. Imagine watching Instagram Reels in a cinema-like, personal experience.
Pre-orders for the ROG XREAL R1 open at Best Buy on May 15, 2026. The price may be higher than that of traditional gaming monitors or TVs due to the AR features and micro-OLED tech, but there is currently no confirmed price. If you prefer to buy directly, the XREAL Official Store opens for pre-orders on May 17, 2026.
