The original Tado X was already Stuff’s favourite smart thermostat – but there’s always room for improvement, right? The new second generation version promises sleeker looks, easier installation, and more intuitive controls to keep you toasty once the cold weather sets in.
Rather than bring back the dramatic black colour scheme seen on the OG Tado X, this new model has gone for subtle Snow White finish that’ll slip into the background instead of commanding attention. Tado also reckons it’s now the thinnest smart thermostat in the European and US markets, at just 17.8mm, so it’ll sit nice and flush to your wall.
A new interactive light ring on the front face lets you quickly adjust the temperature, while an illuminated LCD display in the centre gives at-a-glance info – for things like humidity as well as temp – when you prod the new customisable Quick Action button on the top edge. This can also resume your scheduled heating programme, or temporarily boost it, without having to reach for the smartphone companion app.
That app, which Tado says is “best in class”, remains unchanged, with support for remote access and the same comprehensive smart home integration as seen on the original X. Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Matter are all supported.
The X (2nd gen) is the only smart thermostat in Tado’s line-up with a rechargeable battery; three hours plugged in via USB-C is apparently enough for more than a year of use.
While not necessarily key to UK customers, given stricter regulations around boilers and home heating systems, the new X is also much easier to install than its predecessor. There are fewer terminals to wire up now, while automatic wiring detection removes some guesswork. The firm says it has the highest compatibility rate across European heating systems. Crucially it’s backwards-compatible with the first X, which should make upgrades a cinch.
Being able to perform a hydronic balancing solely through software using smart radiator thermostats could also let those on the continent apply for certain subsidies. For everyone else it’ll mean better heating efficiency and lower bills.
The launch also officially sees the launch of Multi-home, a long-awaited feature that’ll let Tado users manage multiple locations without having to log in and out of the app or juggle multiple accounts. One account signed up to Tado’s AI Assist subscription service (which includes automations and insights for €30 per year) can apply it to up to five homes. It’s not just for holiday home NIMBYs, either – you’ll now have a better time managing the heating for older relatives, and it’ll let you control smart air conditioners via Tado’s V3+ system.
The Smart Thermostat (2nd Gen) is on sale now: prices start from £110 for a wired version of the thermostat or £160 for a starter kit including the Bridge X, while the wireless version begins at £90 for the temperature sensor on its lonesome or £170 for a kit including the receiver.
