Summary
- The variety of content on YouTube keeps me entertained just enough.
- YouTube Premium eliminates ads, saves time, and supports my favorite creators.
- Access to YouTube Music Premium and background play on YouTube make it worth the monthly cost.
Despite YouTube Premium’s price hikes, I’m still happy to pay its monthly fee. Don’t get me wrong; I still subscribe to one of Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Disney+, but when it comes to YouTube Premium, I’ll never stop subscribing.
I Love the Variety of Content on YouTube
There are a lot of creators on YouTube, and they’re the primary reason why I subscribe to Premium. Since I’m primarily interested in tech, I find many channels that cover my interests promptly, like Linus Tech Tips, Gamers Nexus, and Dave2D. However, I’m also a car and aviation nut, so I enjoy content from Donut Media, Found And Explained, and Engineering Explained. Finally, I also find channels like Vox, Johnny Harris, Wendover Productions, and Simple History hugely entertaining.
The huge number of creators on YouTube provides me with a lot of variety when I’m looking for something interesting. The app’s algorithm always has something for me when I open it. Now, if the videos on offer ever stop grabbing my attention, I can reset YouTube’s recommendations so that it stops giving me irrelevant video suggestions.
Aside from the variety on YouTube, most of the creators I watch create content that is between ten and thirty minutes long—just enough length to allow me to pass the time and get entertained while I’m doing other activities, but not too long to consume too much of my day.
No Ads Anywhere
Since I spend a lot of time watching videos on YouTube, paying a monthly fee to remove all the ads that disturb my watching experience is absolutely worth it. Watching around five YouTube videos daily accounts for about a minute of ads daily, or about 30 minutes monthly. So, by paying a monthly fee, I save that amount of time and do something else instead of forcing myself to watch an ad.
This isn’t limited to watching YouTube on my phone, too. Since I also sometimes watch on my tablet or smart TV, I don’t get ads on those devices, either. This is particularly useful if I have guests over and I ask them to watch something with me on YouTube.
I also love to think that my favorite creator gets a part of the subscription I pay whenever I watch their content. Buying YouTube Premium means I’m actually supporting them. Aside from that, the Family plan makes YouTube Premium so much more affordable—so even if just two people in your family watch YouTube a lot, you should definitely buy it.
Download Videos to Watch Offline
Watching videos on YouTube is a good way to pass the time, especially when I’m traveling. However, watching high-quality videos on YouTube uses up a lot of mobile data, and it can get expensive if you don’t download them to your device first.
That’s why YouTube Premium is a must for me; that way, I can watch videos wherever I go without worrying about expensive fees. This is especially crucial when I travel by plane, as there’s usually no mobile data connection in the air, and getting in-flight Wi-Fi is way out of my budget.
In addition, YouTube Premium includes the Smart Downloads feature, which suggests the videos that I might be interested in and automatically downloads them to my device. So, even if I unexpectedly lose an internet connection, I can still enjoy watching videos on YouTube, albeit with a more limited number of options.
It Gives Me Access to YouTube Music Premium
With YouTube Premium, I also get access to YouTube Music Premium, which makes the YouTube Premium subscription such a great value. At the time of writing, Spotify Premium costs $11.99 per month for an individual, while YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month. So, you can look at it this way: you’re getting a premium music streaming service with YouTube Music for the same cost as Spotify Premium, and you just tack on an extra $2 a month, and you get everything on YouTube, too.
YouTube Music’s library is about as big as Spotify’s, so you’re likely not missing out on any of your favorite artists. But aside from that, it also has a few other features, like an AI radio that rocks and excellent recommendations to help you find your next favorite track. If you ever find that the app is failing to give you tunes that you like, you can always improve your YouTube Music recommendations with a few tricks.
Background Play Is a Must for YouTube-Only Podcasts
We’ve reached an age where we no longer consume content on the radio and TV, and that’s why podcasts are becoming more popular each day. However, not all podcasts are available on your favorite music streaming platform, such as Spotify. There are some podcasters who choose video podcasting only, so you can only find them on a video platform like YouTube.
I often consume podcasts when doing something else, like washing the dishes or going out on a walk. That’s why background play is a must for me, so I don’t need to have my phone’s screen running while listening to a podcast on YouTube. Aside from this, I can also do other things, like check my exercise tracking app or even reply to text messages without disturbing the podcast I’m listening to.
These are a few reasons why I still stick with YouTube Premium despite its price increases. Sure, I’m not happy I have to pay more, but I still get a lot of value from YouTube. I’m more likely to end my subscription on Netflix, Apple TV, or several other streaming platforms before I stop paying for YouTube Premium.
