Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)
Fun and free AI chatbots are everywhere, but figuring out the best options isn’t always easy. Many free AI chatbots are just crude versions of OpenAI’s free GPT-3 API, which is now “old” compared to modern AI models. So, with that in mind, here are the best free AI chatbots to try.
ChatGPT remains a top choice for many, including myself. ChatGPT is a versatile AI chatbot known for its conversational abilities. It can generate human-like text, answer questions, and assist with various tasks. ChatGPT stands out from all the other chatbots for its speed, adaptability, and the level of depth it provides when giving a response.
ChatGPT offers various models, but the free version still packs a punch for most users. With ChatGPT free, you still get limited access to the latest models and functionalities, such as OpenAI’s full GPT-4o model, image generation with DALL-E, file upload, and advanced voice conversation on your phone. So, you get almost every premium feature completely free, albeit with limited prompts.
There are even many free ChatGPT browser extensions that can further enhance your experience and add functionalities not available on ChatGPT.
Meta AI is embedded across Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. Meta AI uses Meta’s Lllama 3 LLM (Large Language Model), capable of human-like conversations, image generation with Emu, and live translation. What I like about Meta AI is its integration with Meta’s social media messaging apps, allowing me to chat with Meta AI on Messenger just like how I would chat with actual friends and family. It’s less focused on heavy tasks like coding or complex problem-solving, but for quick, friendly interactions on my phone, it’s a solid pick.
3 Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)
Microsoft Copilot uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo model and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Edge. Its ability to pull real-time information from the web gives it a unique edge, especially for research tasks. Whether you’re comparing products, planning a trip, or solving math problems, Copilot combines conversational ease with the power of a search engine. Plus, it’s free to use, provided you have a Microsoft account.
The latest versions of Windows 11 have also integrated Microsoft Copilot, making it even more convenient for people to use. What I like about Microsoft Copilot over ChatGPT is that I find the UI much better, it provides quicker response than the free version of ChatGPT, and topic suggestions are better geared for daily tasks and more personal applications (which I use it for).
Poe AI is an AI-powered chatbot developed by Quora. It is designed to give users instant answers and engaging conversations using various models, like GPT-3.5 Turbo, Llama 3, Claude, and many more! Providing access to multiple LLMs allows Poe AI to be a versatile tool for different purposes. This allows you to chat with different LLMs and get different answers. You can even create your own bots with Poe, adding a layer of customization. The free version includes many features, though there are limits on high-quality responses from certain models.
Since it’s free, Poe is a great way to test different LLMs by comparing their answers and finding one that fits your personal or professional applications. Of course, you can always use Poe as your go-to chatbot since it primarily uses Claude AI, which is a great all-around LLM you can use for various applications.
Looking for something that’s more about fun than productivity? Character AI lets you engage with characters like fictional personals, historical figures, or even custom-made bots. These bots, known as “characters,” are made and shared by people like yourself. Fans typically create characters for their favorite personalities, whether real or fictional. So, you’re not chatting with actual famous personalities.
Nonetheless, many characters are quite entertaining, often having accurate personas and responding in manners like how you would expect the person or character to respond in real life. Aside from talking to famous personalities or characters from your favorite novels, anime, or cartoons, you can also create a character and share it with friends and family.
With many LLMs today having so many guardrails, chatting with modern AI chatbots can sometimes feel too censored or proper. This is why I added Cleverbot to the list! Cleverbot has been a go-to chatbot for over a decade, known for its quick, quirky replies. While it doesn’t offer the depth or productivity features of newer models, its charm lies in its spontaneity. It’s great for killing time or amusing banter and snarky comments. If you want to chat with someone who doesn’t feel so sanitized, try chatting with Cleverbot.
Looking for a more personalized chat companion? Replica focuses on personal connections, offering a chatbot that can feel like a genuine companion. It’s particularly popular for users seeking emotional support or someone to talk to. While it leans more toward casual, empathetic conversations, it also adapts to your personality over time, creating a customized experience. Replica offers features like mood tracking and journaling to help you with your mental wellness.
What I like about Replika is its game-like UI. Unlike other AI chatbots, Replika provides you with a 3D room and avatar that you can customize and express your personality. So, if you’re looking for an AI chatbot that focuses more on you and what’s on your mind, Replika is an AI chatbot worth checking out.
Kuki, formerly Mitsuku, is an award-winning AI chatbot recognized for its conversational abilities. It can discuss various topics, play games, and even perform tasks like sending emails. Kuki’s engaging personality and versatility make it a favorite among users seeking interactive and entertaining conversations. Another thing that makes Kuki unique is that it has its own social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok.
Although I personally like Replika better, I find the idea of Kuki unique and interesting enough to be an alternative to Replika if you like gamified AI chatbots.
