If you’re looking for an ebook, it’s hard to avoid Amazon. Thanks to the online giant’s Kindle lineup of ereaders and smartphone apps, the company has a huge percentage of the market cornered. But a new ebook platform from Bookshop.org is looking to change that.
You Can Support Independent, Local Bookstores
The new store allows you to purchase and download ebooks from a favorite local bookstore. The chosen store will receive the profit. Profits from orders without a specified bookstore are distributed among the participating locations on the platform.
You can find the platform by downloading the Bookshop.org apps on iPhone/iPad or Android. It’s also available directly through Bookshop.org site.
At launch, there are more than 3 million ebooks available from all major publishers.
“When we launched Bookshop.org, the vision was to support local bookstores in their battle against Amazon and other online retailers,” says Andy Hunter, CEO and Founder of Bookshop.org. “This launch represents our commitment to bookstores and their communities. We’re focused on keeping bookstores afloat and helping them flourish in the digital age.”
Bookshop.org was originally launched in 2020 and has raised more than $35 million for independent bookstores in the United States. More than 80 percent of its profit margin is allocated to the independent bookstores.

I can’t get enough of my Kindle. It’s one of my favorite gadgets I use on a daily basis. It’s truly helped me rediscover my love of reading.
But the new platform from Bookshop.org sounds like a great option to help support truly independent bookstores around the United States.
I downloaded the iPhone app, and the store was easy to browse and quickly allowed me to select a local bookstore I wanted to support. I hope there will eventually be a way for me to purchase ebooks from the platform and transfer the title to my Kindle. But for now, I will happily use my iPad to read books from the platform.
