If you’re paying for the privilege of using a service, the last thing you want to see or hear is ads. Unfortunately, Spotify seems to have a recurring bug causing Premium users to hear ads between songs. However, the streaming service claims that the bug has now been fixed… again.
Spotify (Re)Fixes Bizarre Premium Ads Bug
At the beginning of February, some Spotify Premium users claimed to be hearing ads between songs. Which should not happen to anyone paying for Spotify, as Spotify Premium promises “ad-free music listening.” Spotify investigated, and quickly claimed to have fixed the bug.
However, the Spotify Community support thread continued to be populated by comments from people hit by the bug. And the thread currently runs to 93 pages. Suggesting that the bug hadn’t been fixed at all.
Now, Spotify has marked the bug as “Fixed” once again, and posted on X thanking affected users for their patience before claiming “All clear!” But is it?
Strangely, Spotify told TechCrunch that “the current issue has a different cause from the bug that had been previously reported by users.” Which implies that Spotify has suffered from two distinct bugs over the last month, both of which have caused Premium users to hear ads.
Have You Tried Turning It Off and On Again?
Spotify’s main suggestion for how to fix this is the old adage of turning it off and on again. Or, more specifically, to “log out of the app and back in again 2-3 times in a row.” This, Spotify claims, forces the Spotify app to “resync,” supposedly forcing Spotify’s fix to kick in.
However, throughout this whole episode, there’s been no explanation as to what’s causing the problem. Some are speculating that this could be a sign of an upcoming rejigging of the tiers, with ads being added to the standard Premium tier. Users who want a completely ad-free experience would need to upgrade to a super-premium tier. This is pure speculation though.

Given that this bug has reared its ugly head twice already (and could even be two different bugs), we’ll take the claim that it has now been fixed with a pinch of salt. If you’re a Spotify Premium user still being affected, then we suggest trying the fix of logging in and out several times. But if that doesn’t work, add your voice to the support thread to force Spotify to investigate further.
