If you’re in the market for a top-of-the-line streaming box, the current-generation Apple TV 4K usually takes the top spot. But Roku has just unveiled an updated version of its Ultra that should give Apple a run for its money. And it’s $30 cheaper, too.
Faster Processor, Wi-Fi 6 and a Great Voice Remote
The updated Ultra features a processor that’s up to 30 percent faster than other Roku devices. It’s also an HDMI 2.1 streaming player that allows for Quick Media Switching. With that, it will provide seamless, judder-free transitions between different refresh rates or content sources on some TVs.
Another big plus with the update is Wi-Fi 6. That brings better streaming performance in congested environments and improved efficiency. If you don’t want to use Wi-Fi, the Ultra still sports a built-in Ethernet plug.
The Roku Ultra comes with the Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition). While it sports the usual remote functions, there are some notable additions. Along with backlit buttons and USB-C charging, the remote sports two new buttons. With Quick Launch, you can see personalized shortcuts, like specific apps, a favorite voice command, or something else, directly on the TV screen. The new Guide button gives you one-touch access to the Live TV Channel Guide with more than 400 free, live linear channels.
If you ever misplace the remote, you can just say a simple voice command—“Hey Roku, where is the remote?” You can also pair Bluetooth headphones to the remote to listen to content without disturbing others.
The updated Roku Ultra retails for $99.99 and is available through Roku’s site today and other retailers in the coming weeks.
A Compelling Streaming Device
While the previous Roku Ultra lagged behind the Apple TV 4K in a number of areas, that’s no longer the case with the updated model.
Thanks to better processor, faster Wi-Fi, and great remote, it looks to be one of the best streaming devices on the market.
Roku continues to impress with great streaming devices, and it continues to branch out into other areas of the smart home. One of the most interesting that you might not know about is Roku smart home security.
The company’s security products are inexpensive, easy-to-use, and work in tandem with streaming devices.
