If you have ever wanted to watch Bridgerton on Netflix on your TV with Spanish voice dubbing and Korean subtitles, now you can. This is thanks to Netflix bringing its full list of available language options to the Netflix TV experience.
The Netflix TV Experience Adds All the Languages
Netflix is a global phenomenon. While the company is based in the United States, it’s available in 190 countries, and creates and streams content in multiple different languages. So, with that in mind, it’s no wonder that people want choices when it comes to the languages they apply to Netflix movies and shows.
As announced in a Netflix blog post, Netflix has just expanded those choices for anyone watching Netflix on TV (which refers to smart TVs, streaming boxes, games consoles, etc.) So, now, Netflix users can apply any combination of languages to any show or movie they’re watching on the streaming service on their TV.
Netflix viewers accessing the service via mobile app or on the web could already do this, but it has, until now, been missing from the Netflix TV experience. Before this shift, Netflix would only show a handful of relevant languages based on your location and settings.
You can see an example of how the new options work in action thanks to the YouTube video embedded below. It shows someone watching Bridgerton, and changing the language of both the voice acting and subtitles to whatever they want.
In an emailed press release, Netflix’s Dorian Rosenburg stated that this is “a highly requested feature [as] previously, TV viewers could only choose from a limited set of languages per title.”
It’s easy to see why more language options would be such an oft-requested feature too. As Rosenburg points out, with “nearly a third of all viewing on Netflix coming from non-English shows and films, this update helps break down language barriers, making our global catalog even more accessible.”
Perfect for Anyone Looking to Learn a Language
This update could be a game-changer for several sets of people. The examples cited by Netflix are “a multilingual household choosing a preferred language, someone learning a new language, or viewers discovering international hits like Squid Game, Lupin, and Troll.”
The one I’m most intrigued by is people learning a new language, as what better way to do that than by watching your favorite shows and movies? Several years ago now, we highlighted various ways to learn a new language while watching Netflix. But now, you can do so without any need to download a third-party app.
Just start watching something, then select both the language for the audio and subtitles. You’ll be amazed at how many new words and phrases you’ll pick up on in this way.
