Harlan Coben is a bestselling author known for writing mystery and thriller novels. His books have been flying off the shelves since the 1990s, but it was only in the 2010s that Hollywood really sat up and took notice. Specifically, Netflix has gone all in, creating 13 series (and counting) based on Coben’s work.
But not all Harlan Coben shows are created equal. Some are worth checking out, and others can be safely skipped.
Stay Close
Critic-recommended
Stay Close revolves around Megan Pierce (Cush Jumbo), a seemingly normal suburban mom with a bit of a checkered past that eventually catches up with her. It all goes back to a man named Stewart Greene, whose mysterious death eventually ropes in a couple of other characters. Stay Close follows all of them until we finally learn the full truth of what happened at the end of the eight-episode series.
Stay Close is fast-paced and features plenty of twists and turns, staples of any good Harlan Coben story. This one is a little more whimsical; for instance, there’s a pair of assassins who are also giant fans of musical theaters. Critics seemed to have appreciated the campy elements, since they rated this one very highly; general audiences were less amused. Watch it and figure out which side of the divide you fall on.

The Woods
Harlan Coben does multiple timelines
One of the more ambitious Harlan Coben shows, The Woods is set in two time periods. In 1994, we meet Paweł Kopiński (Hubert Miłkowski), a chaperone at a camp in the woods. His sister disappeared at that camp. We also catch up with Pawel as an adult in 2019, when he’s a recently widowed single father played by Grzegorz Damięcki. When a body turns up surrounded by newspaper clippings about Pawel, he is called in to identify it. One thing leads to another, and we learn that Pawel’s sister may still be alive.
The Woods is as full of twists and turns as any Harlan Coben fan could want, but it got polarizing reviews; in general, critics liked it a lot more than audiences, who sometimes found it too slow or were put off by the English dub, since the show is originally filmed in Polish. If you’re going to watch this one, I’d recommend watching it in Polish with English subtitles.

I Will Find You
The latest and (arguably) greatest
Netflix’s most recent Harlan Coben adaptation came out in June 2026. It stars Sam Worthington (best known for playing tall blue alien Jake Sully in the Avatar movies) as David Burroughs, who’s stewing in prison after allegedly murdering his son. When his ex-sister-in-law Rachel Milles (Britt Lower from Severance) shows him a recent photograph of what appears to be his son, alive and well, he breaks out of prison to track down the people responsible.
I Will Find You is the prototypical Harlan Coben show: it’s a twisty mystery with action, intrigue, and drama dolled out in equal parcels. It’s also the first Harlan Coben adaptation to take place in the United States, which helps it stand out a bit. Both critics and audiences were whelmed by the series, if not bowled over. But the meat-and-potatoes approach makes it an easy, digestible watch.

Safe
The first Harlan Coben Netflix adaptation, and still one of the best
Safe is actually based on an original story from Harlan Coben, rather than on one of his books. That said, all of his normal tropes are here. Dexter’s Michael C. Hall plays a widowed family man who moves himself and his two daughters into a secure gated community…but all is not as it seems. His daughter Jenny (Amy James-Kelly) goes missing, and he has to play detective to find out what happened to her and bring her home.
If Stay Close leaned into the absurdity of the average Harlan Coben mystery, Safe is pared back. The story unfolds gradually, helped along by strong performances. Also, Michael C. Hall fakes a British accent for this one, which is entertaining to watch.

The Innocent
Not that innocent
The first Spanish-language Harlan Coben adaptation, The Innocent stars Marios Casas as Mateo Vidal, a law student who gets pulled into a bar fight that goes horribly wrong. He ends up serving time for his part in the fight, and even though he tries to move on afterward with his new wife Olivia (Aura Garrido), he struggles with feelings of guilt. Meanwhile, he discovers that Olivia may be living a double life. That leads him down a rabbit hole that involves guns, sex cults, blackmail, and murder.
The Innocent distinguishes itself from the normal Harlan Coben drama in a number of different ways. Each episode is told from the perspective of a different character. It focuses more on the psychological dimensions of the characters rather than the plot twists, and overall is more serious and brutal than Coben fans may be expecting. It all adds up to one of the best Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix.

The Stranger
Everyone agrees on this one
The Stranger stars regular Harlan Coben player Richard Armitage as Adam Price, a family man whose life is rocked when a mysterious stranger (Hannah John-Kamen) tells him a secret: his wife (Corinne Price) has been faking her miscarriages. Why would she do this, how does this random person know about it, and why does his wife go missing when Adam approaches her about the situation?
Both critics and audiences agree that The Stranger is a taut, tense tale that’s gripping from front to back, even if it doesn’t match the addictive quality of the book. No series is perfect, but this is about as close as Netflix has come to capturing the magic of Harlan Coben’s books on the screen.

And the rest
If you watch all of these and still want more, there are other Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix, even if shows like Just One Look, Gone for Good, and Hold Tight are generally considered lesser entries. You can also check out Netflix crime shows that have nothing to do with Coben, like the excellent Mindhunter.
And there are more Harlan Coben shows on the way, including a long-anticipated adaptation of his Myron Bolitar books. That’s the series Coben is best known for, so it’s surprising it’s taken this long for someone to adapt it. If you want a taste of what you’re in for, you can always read the books on Kindle ahead of time.
