Why I Only Read Manga on My Kindle Fire Tablet
As a huge reader who prefers physical books over virtual versions, I never thought I’d buy a Kindle Fire Tablet. While I own a Kindle Paperwhite, I find that it doesn’t perform as well when I read graphic novels and manga, so I upgraded.
I Recently Bought A Refurbished Kindle Fire Tablet
About a year ago, I bought a refurbished 2021 Fire HD 10 Plus Tablet from Amazon for about $80. In addition to running games and video calling apps, this tablet supports the Kindle app.
There are tons of books available through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited book subscription service and Comixology, a comics and manga subscription. I started reading manga seriously and wanted to be able to read titles without shelling out money for a full set of the physical copies.
Why I Only Read Manga on My Kindle Fire Tablet
I didn’t necessarily need another tech gadget, but reading manga on my phone was becoming a chore because my phone screen is small, which meant I was constantly zooming in and suffering from eye strain. While I checked out physical manga when I could from the library (and using the library is one of the ways I read more books for free), their catalog was slim.
A typical physical manga costs about $10, with series ranging from 5 to 100 books in total. This adds up for books that only take me about an hour or two to finish. Instead, comic and manga subscriptions from Shonen Jump, Comixology, and Viz are only a few dollars a month and give me access to most of the titles I want to read.
Shonen Jump caters to younger audiences, while Viz has a catalog of more mature manga series including iconic horror manga by Junji Ito that may be more appealing than a Shonen Jump subscription.
The only downside is that, because Amazon’s Fire Tablets do not use the Google Play app store, you can only access Shonen Jump and Viz through a web browser. Still, this is a great way for me to read manga in a much more cost-effective way. I don’t need to use this tablet for games or messaging because I’ve got that covered with my phone and laptop. Instead, it serves as the perfect reading accessory for illustrated books like graphic novels, comics, and manga!
I love reading manga every once in a while to break up my typical reading habits, but these books are expensive. I’m so glad I invested in a Kindle Fire Tablet that provides a bigger screen, so I can enjoy graphic novels and manga.
