You know how usually it’s the early bird who gets the worm? Well, in this case the night owl is getting a deal, because Amtrak has just launched night owl fares from Boston to New York City for only $20 one way.
This fare is available on select trains departing from 7pm through 7am traveling between New York City and Boston. Night Owl fares offer the same service you’d get during normal business hours, but overnight and at a low price.
How low are the Amtrak ‘Night Owl’ prices, really?
Sounds too good to be true? Some commenters online said they had trouble finding these fares, so we did some investigating. If you’re not familiar with the Amtrak service, know that much like plane travel, you’ll save if you book in advance and holidays are always more expensive. We found fares leaving Boston at 8pm and arriving into Manhattan at midnight for just $19 (before taxes), but the trip was for November 29. Looking at November 15, the fare went up to $39 (which is still reasonable!). For a week from publication, we found an $81 fare. The trick here is to book two to three weeks out.
Can I get cheap train fares to other spots?
In addition to the lower train fares to NYC, Amtrak is also offering fares as low as $5 to Providence, and $15 to New Haven from Boston. For less than a couple trips to Starbucks, you can hop the train for a day trip to one of these charming cities.
Where should I take a fun day trip from Boston?

Or, make a weekend of it! Take the train to Kingston, Rhode Island plus a 20-minute Uber, and you’re in gorgeous Newport. The Amtrak also stops in Westerly, home to Watch Hill, and Mystic, Connecticut, and both coastal towns offer so much to do, including beach walks, aquariums, great dining and more.
