I bought an LG OLED (with its webOS) specifically because of how HDR was supposed to look — deep blacks, bright highlights that actually punch, color that doesn’t flatten out in dark scenes. Then I sat down to watch something in actual HDR, and it looked worse than the SDR stuff I’d been watching for years. Skin tones leaned orange. Bright scenes had this waxy glow around anything white. A campfire scene in a nature documentary looked like someone had dragged the saturation slider to the right and forgotten about it.
My first instinct was that HDR was overrated, or that I’d gotten a lemon panel. Neither was true. The TV was doing exactly what its picture mode told it to do, and the picture mode was wrong.
Check if your TV’s picture mode is ruining HDR
Vivid and Standard modes fight HDR instead of helping it
LG ships many of its sets with picture mode options such as Standard and Vivid, and HDR content can use different modes depending on the signal and settings. Standard mode uses normal contrast, brightness, and sharpness levels, while HDR already carries a wider color gamut and higher dynamic range in the signal. You end up with two systems fighting to make the image “pop,” and the result is blown-out highlights and colors that separate from anything resembling accuracy.
I didn’t know this was happening because nothing on screen told me. The HDR badge shows up in the corner when Dolby Vision (which your television may or may not have) or HDR10 content plays. The TV reports it’s receiving an HDR signal. What it doesn’t tell you is that Standard or Vivid mode is applying its own contrast curve on top of that signal instead of respecting the tone mapping the content was actually mastered with.
Turn on Filmmaker Mode to fix washed-out HDR
Here’s why it worked immediately
LG’s Filmmaker Mode does something specific: it turns off motion smoothing, resets sharpness and noise reduction to zero. It locks the color temperature to the standard the content was mastered under. It’s on most LG sets going back several years, and Samsung, Sony, and Vizio all have equivalent modes now too, sometimes under names like Cinema or Dolby Vision Dark.
To turn it on, choose Settings -> Picture -> Picture Mode -> Filmmaker Mode. There’s also an “Auto Filmmaker Mode” toggle buried in the same menu, which is supposed to switch into it automatically whenever the TV detects Filmmaker Mode-eligible metadata in the signal. I’d turn that on too, but don’t fully trust it — I’ve had it silently reset itself to Standard after a firmware update, and I only caught it because a movie looked off again a few weeks later. Worth checking every so often rather than assuming it stuck.
The difference on the same nature documentary was immediate. The campfire scene stopped looking like a lava lamp. Skin tones went from orange to something that actually resembled skin. Dark scenes held detail instead of crushing into a flat black smear or, worse, that hazy gray glow that shows up when a TV is boosting shadow detail past what the source intended.
Additionally, I assumed Filmmaker Mode killed motion smoothing entirely and moved on. It mostly does, but it can sometimes fail to stay enabled on certain inputs or apps, depending on the TV and source device settings, which may indirectly override picture modes or motion settings. If movement looks weirdly fluid — that soap-opera smoothness where camera pans look like they were shot on a home video camera — go to Settings -> Picture -> Picture Options -> TruMotion and set it to Off manually. Don’t rely on Filmmaker Mode to handle it for every single app.

Why maxing out the backlight backfires
This one tripped me up for a while. OLED Light (one of the many sometimes confusing OLED features) controls the panel’s overall brightness, and adjusting it can affect HDR presentation, but it doesn’t function as a simple, direct control for highlight brightness alone. I had mine maxed out for weeks, thinking I was getting more “punch” out of HDR, but I was really just crushing the contrast ratio that makes HDR worth having in the first place. Push it up if you’re watching in a bright room and can’t dim the lights, not because you think HDR is supposed to look brighter across the board.
Filmmaker Mode is built for film and TV content, not games, and turning it on for a console input tends to add input lag you’ll actually feel. For HDR gaming, LG (and most other brands) has a separate toggle called HGiG, usually under Settings -> Picture -> Picture Mode -> Game Optimizer, or sometimes inside the game-specific picture settings. HGiG hands tone-mapping control to the game itself instead of letting the TV guess, which matters a lot for games with their own HDR calibration screens. I’d left this off for months, defaulting to the TV’s own “Dynamic Tone Mapping,” and lost detail in bright areas on anything I played that had proper HDR calibration built in.
Your TV’s defaults were never built for accuracy
None of this is a knock on HDR itself, or on LG specifically — Samsung and Sony ship with similarly aggressive out-of-the-box modes, because a TV that looks punchy and saturated on a showroom floor sells better than one that looks accurate in a dim living room. The tone mapping and wider color gamut HDR promises are real; they’re just sitting underneath a picture mode designed to override them. Switching to Filmmaker Mode, or whatever your brand calls its accuracy-first mode, is less “fixing” HDR than finally letting it do what it was supposed to do all along.
