Summary
- Claude’s US market share more than doubled in March and has tripled since January.
- ChatGPT still dominates (~68% US share, according to Statcounter) but lost about 7% in March as rivals gained ground.
- Many users switched to Claude after controversy around OpenAI’s government deal.
Early in March 2026, we saw something remarkable happen in the AI landscape. Following the announcement of OpenAI’s deal with the US government, Anthropic’s Claude chatbot saw a huge surge in both press and app downloads. Users called for abandoning ChatGPT in favor of Claude.
Now, with March market share numbers available (via Statcounter), it’s become clear that this was more than just talk. Claude’s share of the US market more than doubled over the month, while ChatGPT’s share dropped noticeably over the same period.
The AI controversy of March 2026
Did OpenAI sell out?
The drama all started when Anthropic, the company behind Claude, turned down a contract with the US government. Following this announcement, OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, quickly signed their own deal. The backlash was almost immediate.
There were widespread calls for users to jump from ChatGPT to Claude as a form of protest. Way back on March 2, we found that Claude had already overtaken ChatGPT to become the most-downloaded free app on the App Store. With the new market share numbers, it seems this was more than just a fad.

The numbers don’t lie
ChatGPT is still on top, but Claude’s growth is impressive
First, let’s get this out of the way: ChatGPT remains the dominant AI platform by a substantial margin (like, it’s not even close). According to Statcounter, OpenAI’s tool commands nearly 70% of the US chatbot market across all platforms. Its closest competitor, Gemini, holds less than 12%.
However, the numbers also tell another story: from February to March, ChatGPT went from 73.62% market share to 68.46% — roughly a 7% decrease. Meanwhile, Claude went from 2.5% to 5.61% — nearly a 125% increase. Claude wasn’t the only chatbot to gain in March, either: Gemini also saw an increase of almost 20%.
While it’s always possible that these changes are unrelated, it would be quite a coincidence, given all the headlines and uproar over the last month. The real test, of course, will be whether these trends stick.
Claude is actually really good
It’s a great companion for serious work
If you’re thinking of making the switch, you’re in good company — several MUO writers have found Claude to be the better option. Just be aware of its steeper usage limits — it’s not necessarily meant to be a companion for casual chats so much as a tool for getting real work done. But if that’s what you need, Claude is a fantastic option.
