YouTube processes more video than any other platform on the planet, so shaving even a small percentage off the average bitrate saves an enormous amount of bandwidth across billions of views a day. That’s the real reason YouTube has rolled out AV1 encoding across much of its library, especially for content at 1080p and above.
If your device has hardware AV1 decoding, YouTube can stream a much smaller file without touching the picture quality. Without it, the platform forces a fallback codec with a lower bitrate or tasks your stick’s software with doing the heavy lifting, which usually doesn’t end well.
You can’t dig into menus to force a fix, either. YouTube makes the decision entirely on its own based on what your device reports it can handle, meaning your hardware quietly sets a hard ceiling on your video quality.
Why cheap streaming sticks skip AV1 hardware decoding
The decoder chip is an easy line item to cut
Hardware AV1 decoding requires a dedicated silicon block on the device’s processor. In the world of $20 streaming sticks, where margins are razor-thin, that extra hardware is usually the first thing on the chopping block.
Some low-cost models skip AV1 entirely, quietly capping playback at older codecs no matter what the app requests. Others technically support it, but only through software decoding, which asks the stick’s underpowered processor to do a job it wasn’t designed for.
On your screen, this translates to stuttering, a streaming stick that runs hot after an hour of viewing, or YouTube quietly dropping your resolution to prevent a total freeze. It looks exactly like a bandwidth bottleneck — and plenty of people waste money upgrading their Wi-Fi routers chasing a fix that won’t work. The problem isn’t your internet; it’s underpowered hardware striking a brick wall.
How to check if a streaming stick actually supports AV1
The spec sheet won’t spell it out, so look elsewhere
Don’t expect to see ‘AV1’ splashed across the front of the box — marketing teams would much rather talk about eye-catching buzzwords like 4K and HDR. Instead, look for the chipset name buried in the specs or in a user manual PDF, since that’s where hardware AV1 support is more likely to appear. Amlogic S905X4 and newer, along with the recent Realtek RTD131x chips used in current Roku models, both handle AV1 in hardware rather than pushing the work onto software.
If you want to see what your current stick is actually pulling down, pull up YouTube’s ‘Stats for Nerds’ panel from the video settings menu on your TV. It will show you exactly which codec is handling the live playback.
If you want to skip the forum deep-dives, the current crop of AV1-compliant hardware includes the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max (2022 onward), the Roku Streaming Stick 4K and 4K+, and the Chromecast with Google TV. Most smart TVs built since 2022 by Samsung, LG, Sony, and Hisense also include AV1 decoding, which matters if you’re deciding between a new TV and a stick for an older one.
Where do the major streaming devices stand
- Amazon Fire TV: Hardware AV1 decode is present on the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max (2022 and newer). Older Fire TV Sticks do not have it.
- Roku: Look for the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, 4K+, or the Roku Ultra (2020 and newer models). These run on Realtek chips with built-in AV1 decoding.
- Google: The Chromecast with Google TV supports it out of the box.
Why AV1 matters even more on a data cap or a slow connection

Effective encoding isn’t only about picture quality. It’s about how much data a video actually costs you to watch. If you’re streaming over a mobile hotspot, a capped home plan, or a connection that gets congested during peak hours, AV1’s smaller file sizes stretch your data further and buffer less often at the same visual quality.
That’s a bigger deal for a device meant to live in a bedroom, a dorm, or a rental with average internet than it is for a home already running gigabit fiber, which is part of why it’s easy to overlook while comparing specs at checkout.
What this means the next time you’re shopping for a stick
The instinct with a $20 or $25 streaming stick is to assume you’re only giving up build quality or a slightly clunkier interface. Sometimes that’s true. But missing codec support is a hidden penalty. It stays completely invisible until you’re midway through a movie, wondering why the picture looks so soft or why a fast fiber connection is suddenly buffering.
If you actually care about crisp 4K streaming and keeping buffering to a minimum, spend the extra $10 or $15 for genuine hardware AV1 decoding. That’s the buying criterion that matters most for future-proofing your setup.
