I’m a huge fan of road trips. If someone casually mentions they’re planning one, there’s a good chance I’ll be the first to say, “I’m in.” But before I even think about hitting the road, there’s one thing I always make sure is ready: my Android Auto setup.
Road trips are already a lot of fun, but they’re even better when everything just works the moment you start the car. So, before setting off on my upcoming trip, I put together what I think is the perfect Android Auto setup for any road adventure.
Don’t wait for your internet to betray you
The navigation combo I never road-trip without
Before I leave for any road trip, the very first thing I do is download an offline map from Google Maps. It’s easy to overlook, but it’s probably the most important thing on my road trip checklist. You never really know what the network coverage will be like once you leave the city. In my experience, it usually starts to get patchy on highways and almost disappears on some stretches. The last thing you want when you’re focused on driving is your navigation freezing or, even worse, sending you down the wrong road simply because your internet gave up. That’s why I always download my destination offline before I head out.
But if you really want to make your Android Auto setup even better, install Waze as well. While Google Maps is excellent for getting you from point A to point B, Waze shines once you’re actually on the road. Its community-driven alerts are genuinely useful, especially if you’re driving somewhere unfamiliar. You’ll get advance warnings about accidents, police checkpoints, lane closures, potholes, broken-down vehicles, and other hazards long before you reach them. It gives you enough time to slow down, stay alert, or even take another route if necessary.
That’s why I don’t think of Google Maps and Waze as competitors anymore. They complement each other really well. Google Maps is my go-to for reliable offline navigation, while Waze keeps me updated with everything that’s happening on the road in real time. Using both has become part of my road trip routine, and honestly, I wouldn’t want to head out without either.

Don’t let an empty tank surprise you
A five-minute detour could save you more than you think
The next app I never leave home without is a fuel finder. Trust me, you’ll appreciate it the moment your fuel gauge drops lower than you’d like, and the next town is still miles away. I’ve had moments when I’ve looked at the dashboard, realized I had less fuel than I expected, and immediately wondered whether I should stop at the first gas station I saw or risk driving a little farther. That’s not exactly the kind of decision you want to make in the middle of a road trip.
That’s where I rely on GasBuddy. Before pulling into the nearest station, I quickly check the app to see what the fuel prices are nearby. Sometimes the station just five or ten minutes further down the road is noticeably cheaper, which might not seem like much at first. But on a longer trip with multiple fuel stops, those small savings add up quickly.
I also like that it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the journey. If I’m driving somewhere I’ve never been before, I don’t have to wonder where the next gas station is or whether I’m about to pay far more than I should. A road trip without good music just doesn’t feel like a road trip to me. Long before I start the engine, I’m already thinking about what I’ll be listening to on the way. In fact, putting together a playlist has become part of the excitement. It somehow makes the trip feel real before I’ve even left home.
I always download my playlist beforehand, too. Mobile networks have a habit of disappearing the moment you drive into the best-looking part of the journey, and the last thing I want is my music cutting out right in the middle of my favorite song. Whether it’s songs I’ve loved for years or a bunch of new tracks I’ve been saving for the drive, having them available offline on YouTube Music means the soundtrack never stops.
That said, I don’t spend every hour listening to music. Sometimes, especially on longer stretches of highway, I like switching things up with a podcast. That’s where Pocket Casts comes in. I usually queue up a few episodes before I leave so they play one after another without me having to touch my phone. It’s a great way to catch up, learn something new, or simply listen to an interesting conversation while the miles disappear.
