Summary
- Scheduled Tasks gives ChatGPT automated reminders, recurring updates, and background actions.
- New Scheduled Tasks page shows all tasks in one place and you can set them on your phone or online.
- Scheduled Tasks boosts ChatGPT into a background Android assistant for Plus users, but Gemini still has its strengths.
If you’ve been paying for ChatGPT Plus but still relying on Gemini as your Android assistant, OpenAI’s latest update might change that. Scheduled Tasks already gave ChatGPT the ability to handle reminders, recurring updates, and other automated actions, making it much more useful even when you’re not actively chatting with it. But, it just got a massive upgrade that makes them much easier to manage.
One step closer to being a true assistant
Some assembly required
One of the biggest drawbacks of AI chatbots like ChatGPT has been that it generally requires you to initiate everything. You open the app, ask a question, get your answer, and move on with your day. But, with its Scheduled Tasks functionality, ChatGPT is able to take a more active role in your day-to-day tasks.
The feature isn’t exactly new, it released in 2025, but ChatGPT’s latest update has improved it drastically, making it even easier to create recurring tasks and reminders, as well as set up automated updates on topics that matter to you. The biggest benefit, of course, is that you no longer have to manually ask ChatGPT for the same information every day. Instead, you can have it deliver those updates automatically.
This is perfect for getting round-ups on things like the latest tech news, new reports about AI capabilities, or just any other topic you want to stay up with the latest releases on. And while ChatGPT has had Scheduled Tasks for over a year, the functionality is now getting a major upgrade in the form of a dedicated page that displays all of your scheduled tasks, according to OpenAI’s patch notes. This means you’ll no longer need to go to a new chat and ask about your tasks before managing them, as you can simply select the Scheduled Tasks section on the sidebar and see all of them instantly. Of course, this still requires some setup on your part, as it isn’t baked right into your device. But you can check out some of our tips for setting up Scheduled Tasks to get a better feel for how to make the most of them. The best part, too, is that you can also set up tasks online, in case you don’t want to do it all on your phone.
Another reason to ditch Gemini on your Android phone
But only if you already have a subscription to ChatGPT
One of the biggest advantages that Gemini has over ChatGPT is that it already comes built into most Android phones. Plus, Gemini has its own version of Scheduled Tasks called Scheduled Actions, which works similarly. You can also already edit these on a specific page instead of having to bring them up in the chat, so this update feels more like it’s bringing ChatGPT in line with what Gemini already offers.
Using Gemini is great if you’re used to working in the Google ecosystem, or if you already have a Google AI sub. But, if you’re paying for ChatGPT Plus instead, you might want to get more out of your monthly subscription, and Scheduled Tasks is a great way to do that. And with the ability to manage them more easily, there is even less reason to rely on Gemini in any of your daily operations. OpenAI also says that the tasks will be more reliable and work faster now, too.
A lot of people tend to turn to ChatGPT for help with research, brainstorming, writing assistance, or answering questions. Scheduled Tasks expands that value by allowing ChatGPT to continue helping even after you’ve closed the app. This is really important, especially as more AI functionality starts to become locked behind subscriptions. The more a single service can handle, the easier it becomes to justify paying for it each month. And that’s the only downside to this feature is that it does require you to be subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or higher, and the amount of tasks you can set will be determined based on your plan.

ChatGPT is the flagship AI chatbot from OpenAI, and it’s loaded with features.
Scheduled Tasks won’t suddenly make Gemini obsolete, of course. There’s still a lot Gemini can do that ChatGPT can’t, like create your own custom Android widgets. It also can’t eliminate the convenience of having Google’s assistant baked directly into your Android phone. However, it does give you another reason to think about using ChatGPT as your default assistant on Android instead of Gemini.
