While plenty of apps and websites let you check out your top musical artists and tracks year-round, what if you’re looking for some lighthearted banter and want to know just how bad your listening habits are? Here’s an AI bot that provides the same stats as other tools, but with a humorous twist.
Music Stats With a Side of Snark
You’ve likely come across the online trend of people asking ChatGPT to roast their Instagram pages—or even themselves based on their previous prompts to the AI. What if I told you that’s far from where the AI roasting trend started?
Back in 2020, a digital publication called The Pudding launched an AI tool called How Bad is Your Streaming Music?. From calling out your top-played tracks to questioning why you keep listening to that one song on repeat, the tool isn’t afraid to point out just how basic (or cringe) your music taste might be.
It delivers the stats that truly matter, like your top tracks and artists, all served with a hefty side of snark. According to the tool, it’s been trained on over two million indicators of “objectively good music”, including Pitchfork reviews, record store recommendations, and niche subreddits.
What Will the AI Say About Your Musical Tastes?
When you log into the tool with your Spotify or Apple Music credentials, it’ll start strongly by asking you questions about your listening habits. For example, it began by asking me if I actually listen to “This is me trying” by Taylor Swift—one of my favorite songs!
When I confidently answered “yes”, it immediately followed up with, “Do you listen to it ironically?” Of course, I clicked “no”, only for it to move on and judge another of my favorites. That’s when it judged another top artist of mine and hit me with “Oh great, another Ariana Grande stan…”
Don’t worry, the AI will eventually get tired of roasting your favorite artists and tracks and decide to check in on you instead. Of course, that’ll come with digs at you too. For instance, it asked if I’ve been okay because I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift too much lately.
Feeling mildly called out, I clicked Not really, but instead of cutting me some slack, it replied: “Listen, I’m just a neural net. Do what you gotta do.” Ouch!
To wrap things up, it’ll declare itself slightly nauseated and proceed to share several multi-hyphenated phrases to describe your music taste.
Apparently, my Spotify is: “tay-tay-fangirl-billie-stan-stop-getting-all-your-music-from-tiktok bad.” It didn’t stop there. It generously elaborated that my music taste was also “aging-boy-bander bad”, “trendy-middle-part bad”, “still-listening-to-the-scientist bad”, “arianator bad” and “music-you-hear-at-rite-aid bad”.
It will even call out your most overplayed tracks under a heading titled You listen to these too much, and your favorite artists under You stan these artists to an uncomfortable extent. The AI will then go on to inform you just how basic you are.
To give credit where it’s due, while the AI might have been harsh, it wasn’t entirely wrong. My Spotify Wrapped confirmed Taylor Swift is one of my top artists, I am Gen Z, and I do get a lot of my music recommendations from TikTok—so maybe I am too basic! If you’re looking for something beyond just fun and want Spotify Wrapped-style stats, I’d recommend using Stats.fm.
Using the AI bot is extremely simple. Here’s what you need to do:
- Head to the Judge My Music tool’s website and click the Find Out button.
- You’ll need to connect it to your Spotify or Apple Music account. Hit the Log in with your Spotify or Log in with your Apple Music button as applicable.
- The login page for your chosen service will appear, where you can log in as you normally do (your credentials are not shared with Judge My Music).
- After logging in, follow the on-screen instructions.
Every time I logged in, the tool warned me that Spotify limits how many people can use it simultaneously. Ignore the warning and keep waiting. Now, all you have to do is answer the AI’s questions and watch it mercilessly roast your Spotify listening habits.
It won’t hold back, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
