If you’re anything like me, then popular streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ have become your go-to. But what if you want more specialized content? Well, that is where niche streaming services come in. Here’s a look at some of my favorite platforms.
1 Britbox
Number one of my list of favorite streaming services that aren’t going to have just your usual content is Britbox. This niche streaming service comes from a partnership between the BBC and ITV which offers an all-you-can-watch buffet of classic British television, combined with fresh hits.
From the hard-hitting procedural Line of Duty to upper crust historical dramas like Downton Abbey or The White Princess — as well as the ever-popular Doctor Who — there is something here for anyone.
Can you watch some of these shows in other places? Sure! But nowhere else is going to have such a streamlined, straightforward collection that makes it easy to find your favorite UK shows.
2 WOW Presents Plus
For those who want something more bombastic, then you need WOW Presents Plus. Created by the masterminds behind the beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race, this platform is everything to the Drag Race fandom as well as a hub for international versions of the hit series.
The streaming service also hosts all sorts of LGBT+ and queer-focused originals, something which often goes ignored by some of the bigger streaming services. If I am just looking to unwind, maybe grab a drink, and enjoy myself for the evening, then this is the streaming service I choose.
3 Viki
Viki is my favorite home for all sorts of K-dramas. Well, that, plus so much more. Specializing in a vast array of all things Asian-content related, Viki is a paradise for everyone wanting to watch something from Japan, Thailand, China, and more.
The catalog is top tier. Whether you’re into a melodramatic saga, a quirky rom-com, that bingeworthy K-drama everyone is talking about, or even a crime series, Viki has got you covered. Honestly, I would kind of consider it the Netflix of Asian content, and I say that in the best way possible!
4 RetroCrush
For those who want to kick it old school and wax poetic about the “golden days” of anime, let me guide you to RetroCrush. This streaming service is dedicated to all sorts of vintage anime classics, spanning the epic mecha battles of Robotech to the fantastical adventures of the original Sailor Moon or Astroboy.
RetroCrush is, in a word, a haven for fans who want to discover, or rediscover, the magic of anime’s formative years — from the old-style animation to the retro, if somewhat cheesy, intros. And sometimes it really is just fun to go back and watch something that is a bit simpler.
5 HistoryVault
Now, as a total history nerd, this is one of my favorites. HistoryVault is essentially a streaming time machine, offering countless hours of documentaries covering everything that came before us. From ancient civilizations to more modern-day marvels, this service is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about who we are and where we came from.
Is it the flashiest of the services on this list? No. But if you want to put something on and really learn about that obscure thing so you can go geek out with family and friends; then HistoryVault is the service you are going to want to pick. We even included it in our list of the best documentary streaming services.
6 Docsville
Finally, if you are someone who wants your truth delivered in its most raw and uncut version, then Docsville is going to be right up your alley. This streaming service is focused on bringing the most complex and thought-provoking documentaries right to your screen.
Documentaries range from biographies to nature documentaries, along with a whole range of other topics. It’s also one of the streaming services that offer free trials so you can try it out before subscribing.
Choosing a niche streaming service allows you to find a platform that offers a more curated experience, something that feels personal, enriching, and catered to what you want. So next time you’re running through what feels like endless Netflix recommendations, maybe try broadening your horizons with one of these specialty platforms. After all, life’s too short to settle for boring TV.
